Unforeseen Reunion

The Pen and Muse Book Reviews :

(10/3/2010)

“Don’t tell me you haven’t had this fantasy: The guy who turned you down or hurt you in high school shows up to your 10-20-30 year reunion and is suddenly hot for your body. He chases you mercifully, and you turn him down–successfully breaking his heart the way he broke yours all those years ago.

In Clarissa Yip’s new release,Unforseen Reunion, this is exactly what her heroine, Cara, has planned for her hero, Brant. Cara was Brant’s high school tutor, and a little on the heavy side. She’s now famous, skinny, and drop-dead gorgeous. She also looks nothing like her high school self, so Brant has no idea what he’s in for when he hits on the lonely hottie at his 10-year reunion.

What ensues is a poignant story of two wounded people finding love in each other. And, of course, a little bit of revenge. You’ll never believe some of the twists in this book. I know I didn’t. A couple of times, I was yelling at my computer screen, “WHAT?!?!?” Which, of course, only made me want to read more. This very quick read was emotionally stretching. I found myself alternately hating and loving both characters in the space of 70 pages. Which, again, only made me want to read more.

After reading Clarissa Yip’s debut book (which I reviewed here), I was eager to read more. And now I’m even more so. Yip has a young, sexy voice that women under 30 will identify with and enjoy. Of course, I’m 30 (therefore, not under 30), and I still enjoyed it, so I don’t think it’s age-limited, but I do think that it takes a certain pinache to capture the voice of young women today. And Clarissa Yip has done just that, in both her recent releases.

I hope to read yet more of Clarissa Yip. She’s re-introducing me to the edgy, contemporary, sizzling romance.”

Hunter’s Review:

“What a wonderful book this is!

Although Brant did some really, truly unforgivable things to Cara in High School, he is a really nice guy now. When he sees Cara at his High School Reunion he wants her, although he doesn’t remember her. She’s furious and she launches a glass of white wine in his face.

The question is what will happen after that? Brant is a man who gets what he wants. But, Cara’s heart is split. Will it be revenge or will it be love?

I adored this tale of two flawed people finding themselves in each others arms. It’s beautifully written—the prose flies off the page like something crafted with perfection in mind.

I’m so impressed with Clarissa Yip and after reading this I will buy anything with her name on it. You should too.”

Cara has big plans for her high school reunion. The successful editor of a plus sized women’s fashion magazine, she has changed beyond all recognition from the overweight wall flower she was in high school. She also wants a little bit of revenge on the boy that she was in love with all through school. Brant had some issues, but that did not excuse him for using her and humiliating her at the prom. He does not even recognize her! Brant can not believe that the gorgeous woman resisting his charms is plain and chubby Cara. He feels guilt for what he did to her, but has no intention of changing his love-em and leave-em ways, at least at first.Cara is living every woman’s dream and it is true that living well is the best revenge, but she would like a little more than that. Brant is good looking, successful, and a bit clueless, but very determined. That combination leads to a rocky romance that could either work or go up in flames. I really liked Cara who really was not bitter despite her need for a little revenge. She was never mean or nasty despite the wild accidents that occurred whenever Brant was around. Brant was not as nice but he improved. The story was fast moving and hard to put down and I really enjoyed it. Cara was a great character throughout the story and Brant really grew up quickly.
